Your Relational Life Affects Everything
By Dr. Mahkada Taylor
The client described is a composite representation drawn from my work, relationships, and broader observation.
Your relational world quietly shapes nearly every aspect of your life – your relationships, your work, the way you see yourself, and how you move through the world. Left unexamined, it can take a significant emotional toll. The good news is that with the right approach, this can change.
One client I’ll refer to as Z is a sophisticated, socially connected professional woman. On the outside, her life appeared full – often the envy of others. But internally, she struggled with loneliness and self-doubt.
In her work life, she found herself being passed up for promotions and opportunities. Her romantic life was marked by anxiety and frustration. And while she maintained long-standing friendships, something consistently felt “off.”
In the Reveal phase of Relational Repatterning™, we began to understand why.
Z was raised in an environment in which belonging was conditional, acceptance depended on meeting others’ expectations. At home, at school, and in her community, she learned to “play the game”: to read what was expected and present herself accordingly.
This strategy worked – it brought her success, connection, and a sense of belonging. Over time, however, it began to work against her.
When I asked her to name just two people around whom she could be fully herself, she struggled. In her romantic life, being agreeable but not fully authentic led to repeated mismatches. In her career, her carefully managed persona worked against her as she was often passed up in favor of colleagues who were less polished, but more relatable. In her own quiet moments, she relentlessly replayed previous interactions, questioning things she said, how she showed up with others, and how others may perceive her.
With this understanding, the work shifted.
In the Rewire phase, Z began to process the early experiences that shaped this pattern, challenge unhelpful beliefs and narratives, reconnect with her authentic self, and increase her capacity to tolerate being more genuine.
In the Relate phase, she learned new relational skills and began to experiment with new ways of relating in real-time. Through these lived experiences, meaningful changes emerged:
- Her sense of loneliness diminished, and her relationships became deeper and more authentic.
- She felt more at ease in her dating life, with less anxiety, decreased frustration, and more clarity.
- She began attracting professional opportunities that aligned with her values, strengths, and way of working.
- She felt more at peace, confident, and internally settled.
In the Reinforce phase, she continued to practice these changes so they became integrated – not something temporary, but a sustainable way of relating and living.
This is the impact of relational patterns – they shape how you experience connection, success, and fulfillment, often across every area of your life. They can, however, be understood, and ultimately changed.
If you’re beginning to recognize patterns in your own life, there are a few ways to start exploring this work more intentionally. A Relational Pattern Deep Dive offers a focused starting point to identify your core pattern and determine a path forward. You’re also welcome to schedule a brief consultation to explore whether this approach is the right fit for you.-
